Restriction of Bliss
I wanted to evoke a message within these photos all about how we as people, no matter our age restrict ourselves from things that bring us bliss, because too much of a good thing, is always a bad thing.
Font Ideation and Utilization
For this assignment, I was tasked with creating a font from scratch, based off of a culture that we felt passionate in representing. Given that I am half German and how much my great grandmother would talk about the beautiful architecture within places in Germany, I decided to try and represent the architectural shape language of Germany in my font.
The Final Font

For my poster, I wanted to incorporate the feelings of the classical gothic design that both the architecture and the shape language of my font conveys. In order to get the feeling of "retro" that I get from seeing the gothic structure, I made the form factor of my poster that of a polaroid, along with the light burn that has been applied to the photo, also reminiscent of a polaroid. I also wanted to incorporate the colors of the German flag to the top of the design to show the importance of the German flag to the history of its people, so, I decided to make that apart of my font as well.
Unique Calendar Design
For this assignment, I was tasked with creating two 12-month calendar designs. One that had a unique form and one that had a unique function. For the second calendar I was inspired by a class I was taking at the same time that was about the unfortunate reality that is the Earth's unsustainable and impactful over usage of plastic. I decided to tackle this project from the perspective of being as environmentally friendly as possible by making a calendar entirely out of recycled items. Creating something like this was a fun challenge as it forced me to think sustainably and made me design something that would help people stay conscious about their plastic usage.
Unique B&W Calendar Design
For this design, I wanted to make a fun and unique calendar design while following the hierarchy of
-
Name of Month
-
Dates
-
Lunar Cycle
-
Year
-
Days of the week
-
Federal Holiday
-
State Holidays
-
“Other” Holidays
-
Observed Days
Final Unique Calendar Design
Physically Printed on Recycled Materials

Each day contains a box in which the consumer will keep track of and log the amount of plastic waste they have created on that given day. I have done this sort of log myself and by the end of the month, the amount that I ended up with was staggering. I believe that consumers who wish to make more environmentally friendly choices will appreciate this calendar as it helps us recognize how much plastic we use in a given day, month, and year.
Gingerbread Houses 101
For this project, I was tasked with creating an instructional book that held some form of meaning to our personal interests. So, I ended up making a book that explains how to build a gingerbread house for beginners, along with some tips from the pros if bakers want to get a head start on the more complicated aspects of the activity.

Flag Design: Fairbanks, Alaska
For this class assignment, I was asked to create a flag that represents many major aspects of a community that is important to me. I decided to create a flag that incorporated different metaphorical imagery that all represents the community I grew up in, good ol' Fairbanks, Alaska. I designed quite a few different mock-ups for the flag (pictured below) and ended up with a final design that ended up giving my peers a sense of understanding for what my hometown is like, making my goal for this flag met.

Narrowing Down Essential Elements

With the three stripes in the background there to represent the northern lights that are prevalent in Fairbanks, the flag is also adorned with a large golden heart in the middle to represent Fairbank's nickname of "The Golden Heart City". The bottom of the flag contains a grey section topped with a blanket of white to represent the iconic Mt. Denali (the highest mountain in North America) that is a short distance from the city. The golden heart rises behind the mountain as to illustrate the sunrise of the summer solstice which is a large-scale event that happens every year in Fairbanks where everyone in the city comes out to enjoy music, competitions, and local vendors.
